The last clap in the crowd as the final note of the national anthem rings out across a spectacular stadium - behold, the Final Symphony.
Shot opposite Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie - one of the largest and most acoustically advance concert halls in the world - Final Symphony showcases a beach volleyball match in a location like no other. Starring German superstars Karla Borger and Maggie Kozuch, these images are a prelude to the last stop of the season - and what a year it’s been so far.
Photographer Martin ‘Tine’ Steinthaler is a longstanding documenter of beach volleyball action and was invited to produce Final Symphony. "The most challenging aspect of this shoot was getting the lighting round - keeping the players as the focal point while capturing the Elphi and the port in the right light. Getting the contrast of the architecture of the Elphi against the location for where the players were was crucial," he said.
“For the setup in terms of equipment I had a huge parabolic soft box for the portraits of the players, and then for the location shots we used eighty percent available light and 20 percent flash."
When it came to working with Karla and Maggie, Tine couldn’t have been happier: "They’re both super professional and focused on what they're doing - whether that’s winning a set or doing a photoshoot. They’re always smiling - I’d like to marry both but maybe I’m not tall enough."
"Hamburg is a special place - I’ve been sailing all my life and this what I most associate with it; it’s a naval city and very diverse. We were just listening to Hans Albers in the car and his songs about sailing away and coming back to kiss all the girls!"
The Swatch Beach Volleyball FIVB World Tour Finals presented by Vodafone take place in Hamburg August 22-27 - see you for the grand finale.
